boiler is the quality, provenance and
reliability of their wood fuel supplies.
Until now, the lack of a consistent,
coordinated wood fuel supply infrastructure
has been the weak link that has hindered the uptake
of biomass fuel systems. This is the issue that the Westwoods project has

The majority of problems experienced by woodchip boilers in
operation can be attributed to poor quality fuel
of the wrong specification.
There are a wide range of wood fuel
specifications and each boiler model has its
optimum requirements for particle size and
moisture content. These need to be adhered
to, as deviation from these requirements can
cause inefficient operation, boiler
breakdown and reduction in its working life.
Most boilers at the small and medium scale
require clean or virgin woodchip. The
warranty of some boilers will not permit the
use of wood fuels with a high leaf and bark
content, such as arboricultural arisings.
These contaminants will produce more ash and
can corrode the sides of the boiler.
