Quality
assured wood fuel supplies
Each biomass boiler requires wood chip fuel that falls within a very specific quality range
of size, shape and moisture content.
Poor quality fuel - whether incorrect moisture content,
size, or due to the presence of other contaminants -
can have an
adverse effect upon boiler efficiency, and may even lead to breakdowns.
Thus, assurance about the consistent, reliable standards of the fuel quality supplied must be a priority consideration for
biomass boiler operators.
Adherence to recognised standards
In recognition of this essential requirement, Westwoods adhere to stringent quality control procedures,
in accordance with recognised standards, to ensure that fuel of the correct specification is delivered to fulfil each of the contracts.
CEN (Comite Europeen de Nomalisation) - the
European committee for standardisation - has
produced around 30 draft standards which are
now the de facto standards for the UK.
Stringent quality monitoring procedures
Westwoods provides a fuel quality monitoring service, together with ongoing advice and information on woodfuel specifications.
Once a contract is completed using Westwoods as the broker we
stipulate that a sample is taken from each delivery made, to assist
with quality control and dispute resolution. The delivery sample is retained in a labelled, airtight container.
This is tested using a simple oven test to
calculate the moisture content on a wet
basis.
In the event that a problem arises with the boiler that could be attributed to fuel quality then the delivery sample is
tested for moisture content, chip size, bark content and the presence of any contamination such as stones, metal or dust.
Security & confidence
To add security and confidence to potential consumers, a bond
can be taken by Westwoods. This bond will only be used if the
producer fails to deliver fuel according to the terms of the contract, at which point this money will be used to facilitate the
supply of fuel to the consumer from another member. The bond is fully refundable when the contract expires.
