For wood fuel consumers Westwoods provides security of supply

Westwoods is aiming to encourage the development of a market for wood fuel by working in close cooperation with those who have or are planning to install wood fuel systems.

Planning ahead pays dividends
Ideally, you should organise your wood fuel supply at the same time that you get quotes or put out a tender for your boiler. This might be as much as 18 months ahead of when the boiler is due to come on-line.

Unfortunately, in most cases the fuel supply gets left until the last minute. This does not give a supplier the time to plan ahead, buy timber in bulk and allow it to season. The result is that you will end up paying a higher price.

Simplify your fuel procurement
Westwoods can help wood fuel energy consumers to source wood fuel through the group's supplier members.

We will visit your site in order to understand your user-requirements, your boiler choice, wood fuel specification, fuel store type and dimensions, and the delivery logistics.

Tender for a supplier from the producer group
We can then produce a project-specific wood fuel tender and send this out to appropriate producer-members who are able to fulfil these requirements. We can offer technical assistance in interpreting the responses but you make the final choice of supplier.

If you are based in the West of England and are thinking of installing a biomass boiler, or already have one installed, and would like us to help you procure wood fuel, then please contact us

  Publications
You can read more about biomass fuels in the Carbon Trust publication 'Biomass Heating: A practical guide for potential users'. The guide can be downloaded from the Carbon Trust web site (click here).

  Online Assessment tools
You can assess the basic economics of a biomass scheme using an online tool developed by the Carbon Trust. In order to be able to work through this you will need to have a good idea of:
  • The site's annual energy consumption
  • The capacity factor of the building
  • The kW rating of the proposed biomass boiler
  • The current cost of fossil fuel being paid

  Training
Online Site Assessment training modules
If you are considering installing a biomass boiler a good place to start is the South West Woodshed website. It has an online interactive training package that teaches the basics of biomass wood fuel systems. There are seven training modules that include Wood fuel types and supply; Boiler systems; Overall system design and installation; Operations and maintenance; Planning and permissions; Procurement, contracting and project management; and Economic appraisal/business case.

The training aims to produce a more informed end user/customer who is able to understand the key overall system design and specification features. It does not replace the need for professional design, installation and consultancy, but is an enabler for potential customers to research and explore options for successful system installation. The training is available on the South West Woodshed website (click here).
